In the month of June, Filipinos in Canada celebrate Filipino Heritage Month by attending festivals, indulging in halo-halo and BBQ, watching matinee idols perform songs from yesteryears, and celebrating our history and culture.
How did this special month start?
It all began with Paulina Corpuz from Toronto who asked lots of people to sign a petition to make June our very own month of celebration.
With the help of many supporters, Canada finally made it official in 2018.
The celebrations don’t need to end in June, however, as there are plenty of upcoming Filipino festivals in the summer months extending into the fall.
So go ahead, get your barkada and pamilya together (friends and family), and check out one of these Top 5 Filipino festivals:
The Pinoy Festival: Panahon na para Magsaya 2 is “the largest local Filipino Heritage Month Celebration in British Columbia”. With cultural performances, live music, and of course, Filipino food, this free, family friendly celebration shouldn’t be missed.
Fiesta Extravaganza is one of the biggest Filipino festivals in Canada. With events scheduled in Ottawa, Toronto, Vaughan, Brampton, Lethbridge, Surrey, Hamilton, Niagara, Miramichi, London, Montreal, Winnipeg, and even in Las Vegas, USA, Fiesta Extravaganza will be able to reach a multitude of Filipinos in North America.
With popular artists like Ariel Rivera on the main stage in Toronto, this festival is more bongga: not only will they have food vendors, games, celebrities and dancing, in some cities, they will even have farmer’s markets and job fairs.
